COVID-19vaccination is a safer way to help build protection for people around us and eventually helping our larger community. COVID-19 can have life-threatening complications and there is no way to know how COVID-19 might affect you. And if you get sick, you could spread the disease to friends, family, and others around you. Hence, it’s important to clear our minds with the misinformation floating around and support the cause for the greater good.

As you all might be aware that The vaccination drive in India will be opened up for all citizens above the age of 18 from May 1.You must all be having many questions related to vaccination – type of vaccines, their effectiveness, how long will they protect, whom to give and whom not to give. We will try to address these queries and would request you to share with your friends if you find it useful.

India has so far given more than 12 crore doses of two approved vaccines – Covishield and Covaxin.

To accelerate the vaccination drive Sputnik V, a Russian vaccine has also be included in the covid 19 vaccination program.

Addressing few queries related to vaccines:

How does the COVID-19 vaccine work?

Vaccines work by helping our bodies develop immunity to a virus. It helps introduce viral antigen in non-infective form so that our body can generate antibodies. Now we will talk about each of these vaccines one by one.

Russia’s Sputnik V has been deemed to be safe, and works in a way similar to the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab which is being made in India as Covishield. Sputnik V gives around 92% protection against Covid-19. It uses a cold-type virus, engineered to be harmless, as a carrier to deliver a small fragment of the coronavirus to the body. It can be stored at temperatures of between 2 and 8C degrees (a standard fridge is roughly 3-5C degrees) making it easier to transport and store. The first and the second dose is given 21 days apart.

Covaxin is an inactivated vaccine which means that it is made up of killed coronaviruses. Completely made and developed in India by Bharat Biotech, When administered, immune cells can still recognise the dead virus, prompting the immune system to make antibodies against the pandemic virus. The two doses are given four weeks apart. The vaccine can be stored at 2C to 8C. The vaccine has an efficacy rate of 81%,

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine is being manufactured in India by the Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer. This is also made using a viral vector which is a weakened version of a common cold virus (known as an adenovirus). The jab is administered in two doses given between four and 12 weeks apart. It can be safely stored at temperatures of 2C to 8C. Its effectiveness is upto 90%.

At least for six months or more. This doesn’t mean only six months, it means at least six months. Most scientists believe the protection will last substantially longer

Can you test positive for Covid after getting the vaccine?

Some reports have confirmed that some patients are witnessing covid infection even after their second doses. Such cases are called Breakthrough cases in the medical terminology. There can be following reasons for the same :

+Body’s immune system is weak and body was unable to generate enough antibodies to fight the virus
+Not storing or handling vaccines properly
+Different varriants of Covid Virus on which vaccine is not effective

Such cases are about 1-2 percent and hospitalization rate is quite low in such cases

Antigen Test:According to WHO’s website (World Health Organization), The vaccine will not show positive test results for PCR or antigen tests.”This is because the tests examine the active disease and not whether a person is immune or not,” it states.

Antibody Test: In the case of an antibody test, however, it may be possible to test positive. The serology test measures a person’s Covid-19 immunity. Since the vaccine indicates an immune response, some antibody tests may show results as positive, the International Public Health Agency noted.

Can you get Covid vaccine while you have Covid?

If you currently have COVID-19, wait until you have recovered from your illness and can be around others again before you get vaccinated. This also applies to people who get COVID-19 between their first and second doses.

Do you need Covid vaccine if you had Covid?

Even if you’ve had COVID-19, you should still get vaccinated. A COVID vaccine may offer more reliable and sustained immunity than a previous infection. At the very least, it will add an extra layer of targeted protection.

Who all should not receive vaccination?

Anyone with a severe allergy to any of the ingredients in the COVID-19 vaccines should not receive the vaccine. In addition, anyone with an allergy to polyethylene glycol (PEG) or polysorbate should not receive the vaccine.

Can immune compromised receive covid vaccination?

Yes. These vaccines contain only the genetic instructions for a single protein specific to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, it’s safe for this group to receive either vaccine. People who are very immune compromised can’t have certain vaccines, such as the vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella, because the vaccine contains weakened live viruses that are too dangerous for damaged immune systems.

Can breast feeding mothers and pregnant females receive covid vaccination?

Yes. Most experts and organizations recommend that breastfeeding women receive the COVID-19 vaccine. According to a recent study by the The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, COVID-19 vaccines were found to be safe and effective for pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as potentially providing protection for their babies.
